The name is an ode to Hall of Fame Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders, but the origins of this cultivar are not as obvious. Michigan-based breeders Mota Rebel have crossed their proprietary Lung Candy with Blue Mountain Berry to form one variety of Berry Sanders, though there are others.
